Team Randy, a foundation
which takes handicapped kids from Monmouth and Ocean Counties on day
trips, teamed up with Underwater Discovery of Toms River, The Handicapped
Scuba Assoc. (HSA) of NJ, and Christine Voigtlander from the Girl Scouts
of Ocean County Troop 346 to provide them with an introduction to Scuba
Diving on July 16th. Christine, who was chairman, volunteered for the
event as part of her Gold Award Project, the equivalent of the Boy Scouts
Eagle Scout Award. She coordinated all aspects of the event including
soliciting donations from the Shop-Rite, Foodtown, and Stop n' Shop
supermarkets of Jackson.
Each member of Team Randy received
instructions and watched demonstrations on how to assemble and put on the
equipment and was then escorted to the 9' deep Underwater Discovery pool
for about 30 minutes of submerged diving under the watchful eyes of the
instructors and buddies of HSA. After everyone had their turn and
surfaced, a barbeque of hot dogs, hamburgers, watermelon, and all the
fixin's was held with about 45 people partaking. Certificates and gifts
were given to each of the kids at the conclusion of the day.
All
members of Team Randy had a terrific time with smiles everywhere to be
found amongst the kids, counselors, instructors, and volunteers. Few of
the kids thought they would ever do SCUBA and to see them cheer each other
on was truly a joy.
The event was filmed by Aqua Rock Productions
of New York and will be part of an upcoming documentary.
